So my friends, I'm taking an adolescent literature class this term and have to read 25 novels in 6 weeks.
Yeah, talk about pressure.
I'm looking for suggestions of your favorite middle-grade or young adult books.
Here's the rules:
1. No "classics" (I'm not quite sure what my prof considers classics, but I'm thinking she means the pre-1960s)
2. I can't read more than one or two books in a series.
3. I need variety, so if you have any suggestions that aren't fantasy that would be great--I tend to read a lot of those :). If you have any suggestions in genres like nonfiction, horror, etc., I would love to have them. I'm supposed to read things that I may not normally read.

Man, I barely get through 6 novels in 25 years...
ReplyDeleteMy list has a bit too much fantasy style, I think.. But...
Does Twilight count?
How 'bout 'arry Potter?
Are the Hardy boys / Nancy drew stories too juvenile?
Fablehaven
Jurassic Park
Sphere
The Hunt for Red October
Patriot Games
Interview with a Vampire & another from the series
Of course, you could always check out a local library's recommendations.
AF's list is here:

Orem Public Library's teen recommendations can be found here:

I actually came up with three that are my favorites right now...
ReplyDeleteThe Great Turkey Walk by Kathleen Karr
Adventure and romance and a bunch of turkeys! The protagonist is a young man who walks them across the Great Plains to make a profit in Denver. Love it!
The Shepherd's Granddaughter by Anne Laurel Carter
This book offers a unique perspective on the Israeli - Palestinian conflict from the point of view of a young shepherdess, raised in the ancient Palestinian traditions. Interesting and provocative.
Esperanza Rising by Pam Munoz Ryan
Can I just tell you how much I love this book?!? Esperanza is a young spoiled Spanish girl who, after her father is killed, must work with her mother for her living in California, Okie-style.
I loved, I mean, LOVED all three of these books Karen, and really really hope that you will try them. Happy Reading!
